Chico

California

First stop off the train. Chico is a college town (CSU Chico) in the Sacramento Valley with a strong local culture punching above its size. Sierra Nevada Brewery is here — the original location, not the Asheville one. Bidwell Park is massive and walkable. Hot in July, so plan accordingly: morning hikes, afternoon beer.

Getting There

By train: Amtrak Coast Starlight stops at Chico station. From SLC: California Zephyr to Sacramento (overnight, ~15 hrs), then Coast Starlight north to Chico (~3 hrs). Total transit time: ~18–20 hrs depending on connections. No commercial airport — nearest is Sacramento (SMF, 90 min south) or Redding (RDD, 60 min north) if anyone is flying in. A car is useful but not required for town.

Airbnb or VRBO near the park. College town means reasonable prices outside football weekends. Good option if the group is 4+.

The original location. Full restaurant, beer garden, and taproom. Tours available. This is the whole reason to stop in Chico — the craft beer movement started here.

Book a tour in advance. Restaurant takes reservations.

Smaller local craft brewery. Organic beers, unpretentious taproom. Good contrast to Sierra Nevada — more neighborhood, less destination.

Chico institution. Massive outdoor patio, cold beer, pub food. Gets loud at night (it's next to campus) but great for an afternoon.

Loud at night — best for afternoon drinks.

One of the largest municipal parks in the US — 3,670 acres of Big Chico Creek canyon, trails, swimming holes, and old-growth oaks. Bear Hole and One-Mile are the main swim spots. Do this in the morning before it gets hot.

Go early — hot by midday in July. Bear Hole is the local favorite swim spot.

The blocks around Broadway and Main have good coffee, bookstores, and a real farmers market (Sat mornings, April–Nov). Compact and walkable.

Saturday farmers market if timing works.
